On February 20, 2019,  the federal Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, announced an Expert Panel on Modern Federal Labour Standards to provide her with independent advice on five major issues related to federal labour standards and our changing work life in Canada. This is a continuation of the Canadian government’s assessment and modernization of the Canada Labour Code. The issues to be addressed are intended to encourage inclusive growth, with new protections and enhancements for both workers and employers. The rights of approximately 18,000 employers and 900,000 employees are determined by the Canada Labour Code.

BOYNECLARKE LLP is pleased to announce that our partner, Kathryn A. Raymond Q.C., Arb., Med., has been appointed to the Expert Panel by the federal Minister. Kathryn’s legal knowledge of labour standards and her experience in addressing workplace issues will be an asset to the Expert Panel’s work.

The Panel will engage in consultations with stakeholders and experts across Canada to provide evidence-based advice to the Minister, with the assistance of a Secretariat established for this purpose. The issues to be addressed are protections for workers in non-standard work, the federal minimum wage, access to benefits and portability between employers, disconnecting from work e-communications outside of work hours, and a collective voice for non-unionized employees.
