Recent Changes in the Law respecting Small Claims Court and Family Law Guidelines

On April 1, 2006 legislation was passed that increased the amount that of claim that can be heard at the Small Claims Court level from $15,000 to $25,000. For further information please refer to our lawletter.

Changes to child support came into effect May 1, 2006. The Family Law Guidelines had been unchanged since their introduction in May 1997. The new guideline amounts increase the monthly amount payable by payors to payees, and in some cases the increase may be significant. Any person paying or receiving support should be aware of the changes as the new tables amount to a change in circumstance which may very well merit a change in orders and/or agreements.
